Mastering First Touch: Drills Every Player Needs
Sept 18, 2025 by Coach Boxi Yomba
Your first touch can be the difference between keeping possession or losing it. Coach Boxi shares proven drills to develop control under pressure.
Why First Touch Matters
Every pass you receive sets up your next move. A great first touch creates space, keeps defenders guessing, and builds confidence. Poor control limits options and slows the game down.
Essential Drills
- Wall Pass Drill: Pass against a wall and control the rebound with different surfaces (inside, outside, laces).
- First Touch Box: Create a 3x3 yard grid and receive passes inside—keep the ball under control within the box.
- Pressure Receiving: Have a partner close you down after each pass; focus on quick, clean control.

Takeaways
Repetition is key. Dedicate at least 15 minutes each session to first-touch work. Over time, it becomes second nature—and that’s when confidence and creativity shine on the field.
